The return of the Space Hopper

A few months ago, I saw a familiar old toy at Debenham's: the SPACE HOPPER! Wow so retro, hahaha! [scan/search <- hindi na rewind! :)] Flashback early 70's. Daddy's pasalubong from London. That bright orange rubber "jumper" with a funny face that looks like some unknown animal or an alien (hehe kangaroo pala yon, sabi ng isang website!). Jump! Jump! Jump! Uy, how fun...o sige na nga, dahil "hopper" daw yon, Hop! Hop! Hop! ...with a British accent. Ate MaryRose was probably around 7 or 8 years old then. Me, around 4 or 5. The Alcaneses kids would take turns hopping (uyy mabait daw kami! hehe plastic! actually, we used to fight about it too). We'd make all sorts of stunts with it. The boys would try to dribble it or invent ways to play with it except to hop. I remember falling lots of times because somehow, sometimes the hopper would bounce back instead of forward! But I guess that's all part of the fun.

Our Space Hopper didn't last long for my youngest sister, Debbie to remember and enjoy (she was born in 1972). One of the handles was torn apart and the dirtied rubber eventually deflated.

I should post Ate MaryRose's pic with our dear old Space Hopper (I remember it was taken in front of Daddy's quarters at the Rizal Municipal compound) but couldn't find that photo anymore.

I never saw a Space Hopper in so many years (at least the same one with that Muttley-ish face). It's totally unknown to my next generation cousins who are mostly 80's kids. Actually, this toy made so much mark in our family memories, but I really don't know if this was ever popular here in the Philippines. Popular or not, the Space Hopper is back and I was just so delighted to see a piece of my childhood again.
